HTC One (M8) for Windows review: Tinker, Tailor

Introduction

What if you could pick a phone and then choose its operating system? What if you could get a popular flagship such as the HTC One (M8) and replace the Android OS with Windows Phone? Wonder no more - meet the HTC One (M8) for Windows - the only smartphone giving you the choice!

HTC is the first manufacturer to launch a popular smartphone running on another platform. HTC One (M8) has been around since the last spring season and it has become favorite to many. Now it has a chance to expand its reach beyond the Android users.

Windows Phone is still young and advancing operation system, but since the Windows Phone 8.1, it has become a true competitor to Android and iOS in terms of usability and features. The growing popularity and the free license of Windows Phone to devices under 8" are probably among the reasons HTC has decided on launching its most popular smartphone - the One (M8) - running on Microsoft's OS.

HTC One (M8) for Windows is virtually the same device as the original One (M8) - it's got the same unibody metal shell, the same Snapdragon 801 chipset, the same UltraPixel rear camera duo, and finally, the same beautiful 5" 1080p display. It is absolutely the same device, just running on Windows Phone 8.1.
Key features

    Metal unibody with brushed finish
5" 1080p capacitive touchscreen with 441pi pixel density; Corning Gorilla Glass 3
    Windows Phone 8.1 OS
2.3GHz quad-core Krait 400 CPU; 2GB of RAM; Adreno 330 GPU; Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset
Dual 4MP AF "UltraPixel" (2µm pixel size) camera with 1/3" sensor; 28mm f/2.0 lens; dual-LED flash; HTC ImageChip 2
1080p video capture at 60 fps
5MP front-facing camera with BSI sensor; wide-angle f/2.0 lens; HDR; 1080p video recording
32GB of built-in memory; microSD card slot up to 128GB
Active noise cancellation with a dedicated microphone
Front-facing stereo speakers with BoomSound and built-in amplifiers
2,600mAh battery; Extreme Power Saving Mode

Main disadvantages

    4MP camera can't match higher-resolution rivals
No 4K video recording or OIS (on a flagship device)
    Non user-replaceable battery
    USB On-the-go or USB Host

HTC One (M8) for Windows lacks the same features its Android sibling was missing on - a removable battery, 4K video recording or optical stabilization, and the camera still offers the same low resolution.

HTC Nexus 9 hands-on: First look

Introduction

The Nexus 9 by HTC was a hotly anticipated device on several fronts - it's the first tablet with Android 5.0 Lollipop, it brings HTC back into the tablet game, it's the first big Nexus tablet in two years and it's the first Nexus tablet that goes after a more premium market.

HTC hasn't made a tablet since 2011's Jetstream and we have to say we've missed it. The company's well-known premium touch has been carried over to the Nexus lineup, which in recent years focused solely on mass market affordability. The new Nexus 6 (by Motorola) smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet (by HTC) show Google has enough confidence in its home brand to push for the higher segments of the market.

The Nexus 9 has a metal rim around the device, both for rigidity and a more premium feel. It's a 4:3 tablet similar to the iPads and is the first tablet to feature HTC's BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers. Pre-orders will ship soon - currently available in 16GB and 32GB - and an LTE version is expected shortly after that.
HTC Nexus 9 at a glance:

    Dimensions: 228.2 x 153.7 x 7.9mm; 425g (Wi-Fi) / 436g (LTE)
    Display: 8.9" IPS LCD touchscreen, 2,048 x 1,536 resolution; Gorilla Glass 3
    Chipset: Nvidia Tegra K1: dual-core Denver @ 2.3GHz; Kepler DX1 GPU; 2GB RAM
    OS: Android 5.0 Lollipop
Camera: 8MP main camera with 1080p@30fps video capture
Front camera: 1.6MP front-facing camera with 720p video capture
    Storage: 16GB / 32GB built-in
    Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1 with aptX, A-GPS + GLONASS; microUSB 2.0
    Battery: 6,700mAh Li Po
    Misc: BoomSound stereo speakers

Nvidia is regaining its foothold as an Android chipset manufacturer, mostly among tablets. The Nexus 9 is the first device to sport the 64-bit Tegra K1 chipset with Nvidia's own Denver processor. The GPU, Kepler, is also of Nvidia design and from what we've seen in the other K1 chipset version it's a portable beast - it tops Adreno, Mali and PowerVR handedly.

Google made an interesting decision to move to a 4:3 aspect ratio. It's better for web pages and documents, but not as good for video playback (which would have gone great with the front-facing speakers). As the first Lollipop tablet and one of two launch Lollipop devices, part of its job is to make sure apps are ready when other devices get the update. Will developers find app UX better on a 4:3 screen rather than the wide 16:9/16:10 tablets that are popular today? Devs have months to find the answer.

HTC Desire 700, 601, 501, and 300 smartphones unveiled in Taiwan

HTC may be taking a hard hit in the US market, but it certainly isn’t slowing down in its home turf. The Taiwanese phone maker has just announced not one but fourHTC Desire smartphones for that market, namely, the Desire 700, the Desire 601, the Desire 501, and the Desire 300.
htc-desire-700-601-501-300
If some of these devices sound familiar, it is because HTC has already showed them to the rest of the world. In particular, the Desire 601 and Desire 300 were firstannounced last September at the IFA trade show in Berlin. The Desire 600 was advertised to bring some of the HTC One’s features to a mid-range smartphone. The Desire 300, on the other hand, is an entry-level device that was also offeredexclusively from Australian company Telstra.
New to our ears is the Desire 700 which, like the Desire 601, comes in a dual SIM configuration. This smartphone runs on a 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and has been outfitted with 1 GB of RAM and an 8 GB internal storage. While it does have a 5-inch display, pixel resolution is rather low at 960×540. Rear and front-facing cameras are set to 8 megapixels and 2.1 megapixels, respectively.
The Desire 501 has relatively lower specs, such as a 4.3-inch 800×480 resolution display and a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. Similar to the Desire 701, the Desire 501 has 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage capacity, an 8 megapixel rear camera, and a 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera.
The HTC Desire 700 fetches the highest price tag at 13,900 NTD, or around $470. The Desire 601 is priced at 10,900 NTD, roughly $370, while the Desire 501 follows not far behind at 9,900 or $330. The Desire 300, unsurprisingly, has the lowest price, at 7,900 NTD, which is around $270 when converted.

HTC announces Desire 700, 501 and dual-SIM 601 in Taiwan

HTC held a presentation in Taiwan today to show off its new range of low and mid-range phones. Dual-SIM is feature on two of the three new phones, which all belong to the Desire lineup.

HTC Desire 700

The HTC Desire 700 is a more affordable alternative to the HTC One, with a bigger 5" screen but a lower resolution, qHD. Just like the One, it packs stereo BoomSound speakers on the front. It's powered by a quad-core Snapdragon chipset (the S400 with four Cortex-A7 cores most likely, details are sparse) and offers 1GB RAM.

The Desire 700 has a traditional 8MP camera with a BSI sensor and an f/2.0 aperture, 2.1MP front-facing camera (again with BSI sensor). The main camera can record 1080p video and has HTC Zoe support. The built-in storage is 8GB and there's a microSD card.
The HTC Desire 700 is a dual-SIM phone with HSPA support on the first SIM slot and GSM/EDGE on the second SIM slot. Both slots are of the micro variety. The 2,100mAh Li-Po battery (rather small for a phone of this size) is good for nearly 12 hours of 3G calls.
The phone is priced NTD 13,900 in Taiwan, which works out to $470.

HTC Desire 501

If the 700 is a HTC One alternative, then the Desire 501 looks up to the HTC One mini. It has a 4.3" WVGA screen, dual-core 1.15GHz processor (almost certainly not a Krait, maybe it's a Cortex-A6 like the Desire 500).

The phone has the same 8MP/2.1MP camera combo as the 700 along with HTC ImageChip, but strangely no Zoe support. There's no stereo speakers on the front either.
Still, the Desire 501 is like the 700 in several other aspects, it has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with a microSD expansion slot and a 2,100mAh battery. This gives the phone several weapons over the One mini (card slot, bigger battery) but the screen is no match for the 720p LCD on the mini, nor is the CPU up to par with the Krait-based chipset.
The 501 is not a dual-SIM phone, you can look to the very similar HTC Desire 500 for that.
The phone will cost NTD 9,900 ($330) in Taiwan.

HTC Desire 601

The HTC Desire 601 is already official, but now it also got a dual-SIM version. The phone is a 4.5" version of the 701, with almost the exact same feature set except that the main camera has been demoted to a 5MP/1080p shooter and the internal storage has been halved to 4GB (the microSD card slot is still in place).

There's dual-SIM support, front-facing BoomSound stereo speakers and a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. This one is a bit strange as the single-SIM Desire 601 has a dual-core 1.4GHz processor.
This one is priced NTD 10,900 ($370).
HTC also showed off the Desire 300, but there's nothing new about that. It's the cheapest of the bunch, costing NTD 7,900 ($270).

Google Play edition HTC One getting Android 4.4 KitKat update, here's your direct OTA link

Over-the-air update now rolling out

Hot on the heels of the open-source code drop, the Google Play edition HTC One has started receiving its over-the-air update to the latest version of Android, 4.4 KitKat. The 320MB update is arriving automatically on some handsets today — though as usual, not everyone will receive the update right away. As is the case with other non-Nexus 5 devices, the update includes the older stock Android launcher as opposed to the new one with Google Now integrated.
If you want to sideload the update, we've got the download link after the break.
Note: On the Google Play edition HTC One you can download the update directly to local storage, then use the "update from phone storage" in the stock recovery to flash your update.
Alternatively, use the method for manually updating Nexus devices.

HTC announces the HTC One in gold

After the 'real gold' HTC One, this one's more of a 'champagne' version

Following the (very) limited arrival of the HTC One in 18-carat gold, HTC has announced a new "golden" version of the HTC One to go alongside the silver, black, red and blue versions. As a mainstream color option, this version isn't plated with the precious metal — rather the aluminum chassis has been treated with a "champagne" color, similar to the "gold" iPhone 5s. Besides the eye-catching exterior, it's basically the same handset we've been using since the spring, with a Snapdragon 600 CPU, 1080p display and Android 4.3 plus HTC Sense 5.5.

The gold HTC One will be released across Europe "with a number of partners," HTC says, adding that details of local availability will be revealed later today.

So is anyone tempted by this new color option for the HTC One? Shout out in the comments!

HTC 0P6B120 you believe that the next flagship of HTC appeared to benchmark

HTC smartphones made "HTC 0P6B120" appeared on the measurement result of the AnTuTu Benchmark. Score has become a 36062, I'm leaving the result is higher than the HTC-made smartphone so far. HTC 0P6B120 is a Manufacturer's part number of unpublished terminal. It has been found that it uses the Android to the OS. I suspect chipset is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 from the chip set adoption trend of HTC and score. HTC is developing the HTC M8 as smartphones become the next flagship. In the pattern for mounting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, it is possible that HTC 0P6B Series corresponds to the Manufacturer's part number of HTC M8 the chip set. It is said that HTC M8 is also appearing in the 2014 first quarter, it is where you want to wait in the fun.

Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play editions start to receive Android 4.4 update

According to a post on Android's Google+ page, both the HTC One Google Play edition and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition have started receiving their update to Android 4.4 beginning on Monday night. The update is being sent out in staggered fashion which means that not everyone will be receiving the chocolatey build of the OS on the same day.

The update to Android 4.4 brings a number of new features including an improved UI, the merging of your MMS and SMS messages on Hangouts, support for closed captioning, the ability to remotely wipe your phone with Android Device Manager, an improved camera app, longer battery life and more.

Recently we showed you a leaked document that showed that the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will receive the Android 4.4 update in January. Considering that the update will need to undergo some carrier testing, we could see Android 4.4 hit the Samsung Galaxy S4 in the states sometime after the turn of the year, hopefully by the time Q1 is over. Meanwhile, HTC One owners in the U.S. and the U.K. with a carrier branded model are supposed to be updated to Android 4.4 sometime in the first month of the year.

HTC One just $29.99 at Sprint and Verizon for Black Friday; win a 24K gold plated HTC One

With the HTC One now available in phablet size, albeit for a pretty big price, is the regular-sized HTC One still a tempting choice for the holidays? How about if we told you that you could buy the device for only $29.99 on contract this weekend from Sprint or Verizon. Actually, the phone is priced at $49.99 from now until Thursday, with a two-year pact from the two carriers. Saturday and Sunday, the price drops to the aforementioned $29.99 before reverting back to $49.99 from December 1st through December 7th.

And you can actually enter a contest to win a 24K gold plated HTC One valued at $2500. HTC is asking you, starting today, to upload a picture onto its website via HTC.com/NYC, or by sending a tweet to @HTCUSA with the hashtags #HTCinNYC and #US in one tweet. You can also send in your picture via email to NYC@HTC.com along with your first name, last name, country, and email address. Another way to enter the contest is to visit HTC's ambassador in Times Square at certain times and dates. Each picture uploaded gives you an entry in the weekly drawing and one entry for the grand prize. Certain pictures will also be displayed on one of the famous Times Square display boards.

The weekly prize is one HTC One handset. There will be two grand prize drawings, one on December 27th and the other on January 3rd with the winners each receiving the 24K gold plated HTC One.

Samsung Galaxy S4 beats HTC One in ‘uncheatable’ gaming benchmark

When Samsung was accused of cheating in benchmarks on the Galaxy S4 by making its hardware run at higher clock speeds when benchmark apps were run, people were quick to jump at the chance of throwing curses and insults at the Korean manufacturer. That stopped when it was discovered that almost every manufacturer does the same cheating in benchmarks, a fact that even more strongly proved that benchmarks are never an indication of how the device will perform in actual usage.
Well, now a startup called GameBench, whose founders previously worked at chip companies like ARM and MediaTek, have come up with a “uncheatable” benchmark that can be used to discover the true gaming capabilities of a device, while corroborating the scores given to devices by other benchmark apps. GameBench’s app (currently in beta) was used to test both the Galaxy S4 and HTC One in gaming performance, and it turned out that Samsung’s “fake” benchmark scores are actually closer to its real-life performance than other devices (in this case, the HTC One’s).
gbfps-lead
GameBench’s app runs in the background while an actual game is being played and takes numerous measurements, including the frame rate and amount of battery drain. While the S4 was a bit heavier on the battery, it delivered smoother frame rates in four different games. In Real Racing 3, the Galaxy S4 delivered a frame rate of 26, considerably ahead of the One’s 21 fps; meanwhile, in Minion Rush, which is nowhere near as graphically advanced as Real Racing 3 but still has a lot of things going on on the screen at any time, the S4 scored almost 30 points in frame rate, while the One was far behind with only 19 fps.
gbbat-lead
Of course, these differences in frame rate can be attributed to how a game is optimized for a particular device (Dead Trigger delivers almost the same framerates in both, which is not surprising since Dead Trigger is one of the most optimized games that has ever been released for Android), and the S4 is also running a higher clocked version of the Snapdragon 600 chipset that powers both devices, but one thing is certain: Samsung might be fooling everyone when it comes to benchmarks, but its devices are still capable of actually providing performance in real life that is closer to that exhibited by benchmark apps.

Verizon now selling the HTC One Max for $299

With exactly zero fanfare, Verizon today has begun selling the HTC One Max. It'll cost you $299 on contract, or $25.22 a month with the Verizon Edge plan. Outright, you'll be paying $599.
The HTC One Max is a large — 5.9-inch display, but the phone itself is a bit bigger than that thanks to the front-facing speakers — version of the HTC One, with the new Sense 5.5 software and a fingerprint sensor on the back for unlocking. You can open up the back to get to the SIM card and (yes!) the microSD card slot.
Here's how our own Alex Dobie put things in his official HTC One Max review:
So the One Max is more than a big HTC One, but also a lesser phone than the HTC One. If you’re after the full HTC experience on a larger display, well, for the most part, this is that device. And right now it's the closest you're going to get to an HTC tablet. But for most buyers the smaller, better-looking HTC One, or the higher-end and more manageable Galaxy Note 3 will be better options.

[Deal Alert] AT&T Is Offering 50% Off On Select Smartphones - LG G2, HTC One, Moto X, Galaxy S4, S4 Active, S4 Zoom, And More

If you've been waiting for an opportune time to switch to AT&T, it's now. AT&T is currently offering a limited-time sale on a handful of on-contract devices, some of which are pretty desirable. It doesn't cover everything (the almost brand-new Galaxy Note 3 is notably absent, for example) but you should be able to save a pretty penny on your purchase.
7TFl0AQ
The best deal of the lot is probably the LG G2, at least if you're looking for cheap, powerful hardware. You can get LG's Snapdragon 800-powered flagship for just $49.99. Sticking with the flagships, the Galaxy S4 is $99.99 for the 16GB model (with the tougher Galaxy S4 Active going for the same price), the HTC One is $74.99 for 32GB, and the Moto X is $49.99... though you might want to forego the savings on that phone and use the Moto Maker customization site. Shutterbugs can pick up a Galaxy S4 Zoom for $99.99, and fans of ginormous screens can get a Galaxy Mega for $74.99 or a Galaxy Note II for $99.99. There are a few more deals to be had on less popular phones as well.
Those whose contracts have expired may not be eligible for the discounts. Shipping for all the discounted phones is free. There's no mention of a promotional period or expiration date on the site, so if you want in, you should move fast. The prices show as web exclusives, so walking into an AT&T retail store might not yield the same results. Also note that there may be limited stock at these discounted prices - the half-off HTC One Mini is already showing as "out of stock" on AT&T's website.
