LG Isai VL debuts in Japan with 3GB of RAM and VoLTE

Before the LG G3 got official, we caught a glimpse of what to expect from it through the Isai FL, a handset that has basically been Japan's version of the flagship. It was the first LG smartphone to come with QHD (2,560x1,440) resolution, for example.

And today it's received an ever so slight update. The new model is called LG Isai VL, it's still exclusive to Japanese carrier Au by KDDI, and it very much resembles the Isai FL from earlier this year, even having the exact same dimensions: 145 x 76 x 10.5mm. It is 6g lighter though, coming in at 154g.

Compared to its predecessor it does bump up the RAM to 3GB, and features support for Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) too. Otherwise, though, we're looking at pretty much the same hardware package.

Just like the Isai FL, the new Isai VL comes with a 5.5-inch QHD display, a 13 MP rear camera, a 1.3 MP front camera, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It also sports 32GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD), Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and it's water and dust resistant too. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat and will be available in the three colors you can see above: "aqua", black, and "pink gold".

LG Optimus G Flip brings clamshell style

There was a time when everyone owned a clamshell type mobile phone before we saw the explosion in touchscreen displays, but the LG Optimus G Flip design brings style to the clamshell smartphone.

Mobile phone manufacturers very rarely release new flip style smartphones these days, although Samsung recently released an expensive device in certain regions. Today we have a concept phone idea for you courtesy of Mohammad Ziadan which has been titled the LG Optimus G Flip.

As you can see from the image on this page the device has three touchscreen displays along with one of them doubling as the numbered keypad. Two of displays are both 4-inches in size while the one on the outside of the handset comes in at 4.3-inhces.

There is also a 13-megapixel rear facing camera along with a scrolling volume control while the device is mainly manufactured from a glass material, and the smartphone has a custom user interface running alongside Android.

The days of many consumers owning a flip style smartphone have long gone with the devices not being that popular since the days of the much loved original Motorola Razr handset.

Nokia, LG Electronics, Sony Mobile Communications to stay in tablet market

Smartphone vendors Nokia, LG Electronics and Sony Mobile Communications are likely to continue to stay in the tablet market, while rivals including HTC, Motorola Mobility and BlackBerry may choose to focus on the smartphone sector, according to industry sources.

After releasing its 10.1-inch Lumia 2520 tablet, Nokia plans to expand its tablet portfolio by releasing an 8-inch model, the Lumia 2020, in the first quarter of 2014. The Lumia 2520 and Lumia 2020 both target the mid-range to high-end segment, noted the sources.

LG has announced that it will begin marketing its new tablet, the LG G Pad 8.3, in Taiwan on November 25 with a suggested retail price of NT$9,900 (US$335).

Sony Mobile is expected to release more tablets in 2014 after launching its Xperia Tablet Z in 2013 targeting the high-end tablet segment, while China-based Huawei and ZTE have been stepping up their cooperation with telecom operators to promote entry-level and mid-range tablets.

However, since a number of vendors including Acer, Asustek Computer, Lenovo, and Samsung Electronics have already launched tablets with price tags below US$200, competition in the tablet segment will be keener that in the smartphone sector, commented the sources.

LG G Flex drop test: will the curved screen fall flat?

We’ve done quite a few drop tests over the past months, with smartphones and tablets made of plastic, metal, and glass. Regardless of their build material though, all devices proved vulnerable to drops on their glass screens. Sure, some may survive the frontal impact (the Xperia Z1 for instance), but when you have an exposed sheet of thin glass, it’s only a matter of time until the unthinkable happens.
With a new generation of curved designs upon us, there’s hope that smartphone screens could become more resilient to accidents. In theory, the curvature of the phone should shrink the area that is exposed to impacts, making face drops a little less dangerous.
But that’s the theory. How about the practice? Our Joshua Vergara got his hands on the LG G Flex and put it to the test. As usual, he dropped the device on its back, side, and front.
Disappointingly, the G Flex’ screen cracked when Josh dropped it on its side. With the glass screen extending right to the side and lacking the protection of a frame, the G Flex couldn’t survive a direct impact, and the final face down fall only extended the damage.

LG G Flex Drop Test!

It's Drop Test time! LG's G Flex is one of the world's first smartphone to push the curved / flexible display trend forward in a big way. It has a self healing back too! Curved displays are supposed to be harder to break. It's time to see if a curved display actually helps (or hurts) if you drop your phone. Check out Josh's drop test of the LG G Flex! It's drop test time!

Sprint announces holiday deals including $50 LG G2, free Galaxy S 4 Mini, and $100 port-in credit

Sprint has officially announced some deals for the holiday season, and while they aren’t the most aggressive sales ever, it’s a good start. First on the list is the phone selection, which includes the LG G2 for $50 online and the Galaxy S 4 Mini for free, after a 50 mail-in rebate. If you port your number over from any other carrier, Sprint will knock $100 off any available phone with a two-year agreement. If you port a number over and take advantage of Sprint’s One Up plan (the $0 down phone installment plan), Sprint will give you a $100 prepaid Visa card. Either way, that’s basically free money if you were considering making the switch to Sprint anyway.
